Babies can fight through incredible odds when they are born earlier than they should. The advancement in medical technology to help babies get a fighting chance at life is something many parents are thankful for.
One couple, Edwyna and TJ were incredibly grateful for the team that helped their twins survive incredible odds after being born at 25 weeks old.
The couple were ecstatic when they found out they were having twins as Edwyna herself was a triplet and her sister had twin boys. She understood the incredible bond her babies would have.
All was well in Edwyna’s pregnancy and she even posed for a photo at 25 weeks, but soon after she was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital as she went into premature labour.
The twins, Sophie and Riley were born on October 2, 2012 which was four months too early. Edwyna never got to hold her babies as they were immediately separated and taken to NICU to be stablised.
Edwyna and TJ were told their babies would most likely pass away during the birth, but they were stunned to see their babies were alive when they were born.
The twins were considered ‘micro-preemies’ and suffered health issues including chronic lung disease and holes in the heart.
Riley was the most fragile out of the twins as he suffered from one health blow to another. Riley had four surgeries, had a blocked intestine and bleeding ulcer. TJ told the news he whispered into his son’s ear to let him know that if he needed to let go, it would be ok. The toil on the parents was emotionally draining.
But then Riley beat the odds and the twins were able to be reunited together 89 days after they had been born.
The documentary on the twins delivery and survival is nothing short of a miracle, and offers hope to families who face health challenges after delivering a premature baby.
