A Melbourne mum who was in labour, decided to use an Uber instead of an ambulance to get to hospital.
Rati Sinuraya woke up at 2:30am last Tuesday with severe pains. She wasn’t expecting to have her baby until next month. Her husband, Jip Brouwer, decided to get an Uber for transport to the hospital as they could see it was 5 minutes away.
Ms Sinuraya told 9NEWS, “It was hectic, I was in pain. But I didn’t think it was labour time yet.
“We were tossing [up] whether to call an ambulance or Uber, but not sure how long it’s going to be, and it’s 2.30 in the morning, so the roads are not going to be busy,” she said.
Mr Brouwer let the Uber driver know that his wife needed to get to the hospital urgently.
“He asked, ‘is your wife okay?’ and I said ‘yeah, she’s pregnant, she needs to get to a hospital,” Mr Brouwer said.
The Uber driver had been at McDonalds and was still drinking his soda when he arrived to pick the couple up.
Within five minutes of arriving at Royal Women’s Hospital, Ms Sinuraya gave birth to a baby girl.
“They were checking and said, ‘you’re ready to go, you just have to push’”, she said.
News.com.au was sent a screenshot of the Uber receipt which gave the driver Daniel a five star rating, with the cost of travel being $22.70.
The newborn baby, Jasmine Alicia, is doing well but is still in hospital. She needs to be at a healthy baby weight before being released home with mum and dad.
