We all know someone who had some pretty bizarre pregnancy cravings, right? Pregnancy hormones can do some pretty weird things to us gals – making the mere smell of a once-loved meal capable of inducing nausea or vomiting, and previously loathed foods the sudden and compelling object of our desire!
I developed a pretty hard-core need to have ginger, (a flavour that I’ve never been all that fond of previously), with EVERYTHING on my third pregnancy, and salsa! Never-enough-salsa!
But these food cravings pale in comparison to, let’s say, a Bacon Mars Bar Burger, for example.
Yes! You read that correctly!
Artists Vicky Jacob-Ebbinghaus and Juarez Rodrigues have created a new virtual cookbook ‘Eating for Two’ after travelling through several countries interviewing pregnant women about their weirdest food cravings.
“We thought it was interesting that some rather disgusting things could be incredibly tasty to someone who is pregnant.”
The idea for the project was inspired by a pregnant friend who would sneak out of bed at night and secretly eat Oreo’s and toothpaste.
Directions on the website for making your own Oreo and toothpaste recipe includes • Twist the Oreos to separate them.• Cover the icing with toothpaste and put the biscuits back together.
Steak and ice-cream!
Delicious, mouth-watering lump of coal, anyone?
As part of the process of compiling the whacky recipes, Vicky and Juarez not only prepared and photographed the meals, they also sampled them in order to rate them.
Wondering what coal tastes like? According to the website – ‘surprisingly it tastes like nothing. Slightly gritty nothing.’
The worst offender?
You can read more of these hilarious and dubious recipes on the Eating for Two website.
