A Mother from Georgia has been arrested after her son had too many unexplained absences from school.
Julie Giles received a letter from her son’s school the day before Mother’s Day which explained that there was a warrant for her arrest after her 10-year-old son Sam had 12 unexcused absences, which is six more than is allowed by the school.
‘Sam has had 6 more unexcused absences (an absence without a doctor’s note) than the county allows per year this year,’ explained Giles on her Facebook page. ‘If the Sheriff and the Attendance Officer moves forward I will be given the opportunity to turn myself in. I spoke to a county employee yesterday that says arrest IS likely.’
After turning herself in, she wrote on Facebook; ‘I am home. I was actually placed in ankle shackles!! I was told that doing so is procedure. I was respectful and followed directions.
When interviewed by Fox News, Julie explained that six absences are allowed, and a doctor wrote a note explaining three of the other absences, meaning she was being arrested for her son missing school three times.
She also pointed out that her son Sam is on the honor roll and currently has four As and four Bs in his classes.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Giles, who is next set to appear in court in July, to help her fight this charge and possible punishment.
The family has so far raised just over $600 of their $2,500 goal and Julie says that any funds that are not needed will go to charity.
