It’s the Simple Things That Make Motherhood Sweet

Grocery shopping with children can be exhausting at the best of times. Between the constant questions of ‘can we have this’ from the children to then keeping the cherubs in close proximity to the shopping trolley, it can be a stressful trip. You can understand why many parents opt to order the groceries online.
But not all stores offer an online delivery (looking at you ALDI).

When Jess Wolfe was shopping at Aldi with her four children, she didn’t expect to leave the store with a new perspective.

The mum was about to lose her ‘every loving sh*t’ as she was bagging her groceries from ALDI. She had carried a sweaty baby and tried to deal calmly with three active children throughout the whole expedition.

But just when she was getting over everyone questioning her, she was asked another question by a lady next to her.

Jess shared what happened in a post on Facebook that has since gone viral and has been shared over 25,000 times.

Here is what the mum posted on August 3.

Sweaty, baby strapped to my back, three year old insisting that her belly hurts and NEEDS her donut that she forgot to eat after lunch, 6 year old using everything in sight as a weapon, 7 year old wanting to spend the only dollar he has. This. This was my trip to the grocery today. While I was bagging up my groceries (thanks Aldi) and trying to quietly keep from losing my ever loving sh*t, the lady next to me asked if I have one of those phones that takes pictures. Trying not to convey my annoyance to someone else adding to the million questions that make up my day, I replied that, yes I do have one of those fancy phones. She asked to take a picture of me with the kids. At the grocery. Together. She told me that she wishes she had photos of herself doing every day things with her kids. She validated the fact that a simple grocery trip is hard. She told me that what I do matters. She doesn’t miss what made the days hard, but she misses what made them sweet. I will always cherish this picture and the message that came with it.

It truly is the simple things that can make motherhood sweet, but they so often zap us of all energy.

Maybe next time you are shopping with the kids, get a photo.

Take a selfie when you’re at the movie theatre.

Save your Instagram stories or Snapchat videos of the kids when they are engrossed in imaginative play or baking or whatever it is that you share to the world. Keep them saved so you have beautiful memories to look back on.

Because yes, the mundane tasks can be hard with kids. But those simple things matter and one day we will reflect on them as being some of the happiest times with our children.
