I remember when I first found out I was pregnant, I was overwhelmed by all the things I would need to purchase. But one item I was really excited to buy was my nappy bag (aka baby bag). I’d seen some gorgeous, stylish nappy bags and I couldn’t wait to find the one bag that would see me through my baby rearing years. Fast forward 5 years and I admit I have gone through a number of nappy bags due to having more kids and needing more room to store different sized clothes and nappies. My first nappy bag was a designer baby bag and it had been stuffed full of every ‘what if’ need that it didn’t last a year because the handle broke.By the time I had my second baby I realized I needed more than just a small nappy bag, I needed an overnighter style bag to cater for the needs of two children.
Having been there and done that with my nappy bags, I’m going to share some tips and the bags that handled my baby’s needs without looking like I was carrying all the baby things, including the baby sink!
There are two options when choosing your nappy bag. You can purchase a nappy bag that has been designed for the new mum and bub in mind. They often include helpful essentials like pockets for bottles and wipes, change mat, a purse for putting lotions and small items that can get lost if left in a big bag. Or, you can purchase a tote or overnighter bag that can be converted into a nappy bag. These bags are often less expensive than baby bags and don’t come with as many pockets or accessories.
When choosing your nappy bag, to get longevity out of the purchase, make sure it’s a bag that you will use post baby. Some nappy bags are good enough to keep and be used for overnight getaways. They could be a great bag to keep for when your baby grows up and goes to school camp or stay overnight at a friends house. If you can’t resist purchasing a branded baby bag, you may be able to sell it online to get part of your purchase money back, or you could look at Ebay or gumtree to purchase a mum selling hers at a reduced price.
Totes, often have less pockets, but they make a great nappy bag because of the space inside and it’s easy to see at a glance what is in your bag to grab if you have a baby emergency aka Poo Explosion! Totes are a very much needed handbag to have on hand for shopping or doing general errands. Their use is varied well after the baby years.
I’ve found some great nappy bags and totes that will cater for mums with multiple children to mums who just want to pack the bare essentials.
What’s your favourite style of nappy bag? Did you opt for a nappy bag or convert a handbag into a nappy bag?
