Make a freezer meal (or 3!)
New mums are super busy and the last thing on their mind is thinking about what to make for dinner… especially when they haven’t had a good nights sleep for weeks! Drop off a couple of freezer meals – it’ll make dinnertime so much easier!

Go grocery shopping
It’s one of those jobs that just has to be done, but is often a real hassle for new mums. Offer to do the grocery shopping, or make sure you’re there when the groceries get delivered and put them all away for her.

Buy her a new pair of comfy pyjamas
Lets face it – with a newborn baby in tow, pyjama days are going to happen. A comfy new pair of PJs will brighten her day!

Buy trashy magazines
When you’re overtired, sometimes the only thing to do is flick through a trashy magazine. Now is not the time to be bringing around complex, deep-thinking books!

Help out with the laundry
When you visit a new mum, pop a load of washing on when you arrive and hang it out before you leave. And while you’re chatting, fold any clean washing that’s lying around.

Offer to babysit older children
If a new mum has older children, offer to babysit them for a weekend or even just an afternoon. This will give her some special one-on-one time with the baby and will also be an exciting treat for the older siblings.

Ring before you visit and ask if there’s anything she needs
Always ring before visiting a new mum to check if it’s ok. Don’t be offended if she says no – she probably hasn’t slept properly for days and is trying to figure out some sort of routine. If she’s up for a visit, ask if there’s anything you can grab for her on your way over.

Run errands
Just because a new baby has arrived, doesn’t mean that all the usual errands stop. Offer to drop off her mail, return library books, pay bills or anything else she might need.

Drop off a TV series
One of the best cures for sleep deprivation would have to be an afternoon spent watching a TV series. Just make sure it’s something light-hearted and funny! TV series are perfect for a new mum because she can stop and start it as she likes.

Don’t just visit – help out!
Rather than sitting on the couch when you visit, offer to do the dishes, fold washing, cook dinner, water the garden… anything! Helping out with little jobs makes a huge difference.

Take her dog for a walk
In the first few weeks after giving birth, the last thing on a new mum’s mind is remembering to walk the dog. Take this job off her hands by offering to do it for her.

While you can’t write out thank you notes for a new mum, you can certainly help by addressing the envelopes and offering to post them for her.

Bring a slice or cake
New mums have LOTS of visitors during the first few weeks after a baby is born. Drop off a slice or cake that she can enjoy with a cuppa when visitors pop by.
