13 Things We Can Learn From Bridget Jones Having a Baby

Love her or loathe her, Bridget Jones is the woman many of us have related to at some point in our lives. Whether we’ve been unlucky in love, done something embarrassing in public or worn grandma underpants, there’s a little bit of Bridget in all of us.

So to watch Bridget get knocked up at 43, not knowing who the father of her child is… well it’s not totally relatable for all of us, but it makes for an interesting storyline.

Being pregnant is no easy feat, but Bridget takes it in her stride and there is a lot to be learned from the way she handles her pregnancy.

There are 13 things we can learn from Bridget Jones Having a Baby, no matter where each of us are on our motherhood journey. The movie definitely made me grateful for my husband and relatively simple pregnancies. Yet there is much to love about Bridget and her life’s turn of events.

Here are just a few things I took away from the movie.

1. There is no right time to have a baby. Life doesn’t always go to plan. Whether you fall pregnant at 23 or 43, pregnancy can be a delightful surprise (or shock).

2. Condoms have a best before date. If you have sex – and use out-of-date, dolphin saving condoms, you will most likely fall pregnant.

3. Peeing on a stick is harder than it looks. Pressure can play havoc on one’s ability to trickle.

4. A supportive partner (or two) makes pregnancy easier to manage. One partner is probably better as it makes life less complicated.

5. You can’t always choose who you fall in love with. The heart never lies.

6. You will lose your memory or part of your brain when you’re pregnant.

7. More obstetricians need to be like Emma Thompson. #justsaying

8. Middle age is definitely something to look forward to. Compare the current Bridget and Mark Darcy to their younger years, and both have aged well. Bring on middle age.

9. A career is important, but the moment a baby arrives, perspective about work will and can change.

10. Being honest is best for everyone, even if it’s awkward and may hurt those we love.

11. Women can choose to do pregnancy and motherhood alone, but the experience can be so much more when shared with a loving and supportive partner.

12. Old friends will always be there for you, but not necessarily in the same capacity, post-kids.

13. Being honest with ourselves is the greatest gift we can give to ourselves.

Bridget Jones’s Baby is the best movie out of the trilogy so far. There are so many laugh-out-loud scenes, you will want to see the movie again. Even if it’s to see the two babyfathers carry a laboring Jones through the revolving emergency door.

Bridget Jones’s Baby is in theatres now. Check your local theatre for times.
