Engineer Designs Clothes That Grow With Your Baby
Babies and toddlers go through a lot of clothes. Children will grow through 6 sizes of clothes before they turn 2. And that’s not including premmie babies who might start out in 00000 or even smaller sized clothes.
But one aeronautical engineer, specialising in deployable structures, came up with an idea to counteract the problem of babies outgrowing their clothes.
Ryan Mario Yasin came up with his idea after he sent some baby clothes as a gift to his sister who had just had a baby.
Ryan told BBC News, “They grow so quickly. I thought that their clothes should adapt to that growth.”
The engineer created a kids clothing line that grows with a baby. Petit Pli is a kids clothing brand that expands, through its unique pleat structure, so a child will get maximum wear from a garment. The clothes can stretch and retract so they can fit children from 6 months to 3 years old.
The synthetic fabric used to make Petit Pli is machine-washable, waterproof and windproof, making it the perfect material worn by kids. The fabric is winning awards as it can save families spending money on clothes, while reducing waste and their eco footprint.
But the designs do look a bit futuristic and may not suit every parent’s style tastes. Now that Ryan has the prototype for the material, he is working with pattern and textile designers to develop the aesthetics of the styles.
“We’re going to focus on gender-neutral styles particularly so you can pass these clothes on between siblings who are of different genders,” he said. “So that’s another interesting, sustainable aspect of this.”
Ryan has plans to develop a clothing range for the adult market and even maternity clothes for pregnant women who experience “change sizes very quickly”.
