Flight Attendant Rocks and Sings a Crying Baby to Sleep on Late Night Flight
No-one enjoys hearing the distressed screams of a crying baby on a long haul late night flight, especially when that unsettled bub is your own.
A mum was travelling with three young children on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Los Angeles when one of her little ones became upset. He had been crying for half an hour when flight attendant Gina Reyes stepped in and took him in her arms.
Gina, known to many of her friends as “mama Gina”, rocked the crying toddler and sang to him whilst the no-doubt frazzled mum took a couple of deep breaths and tended to her other children.
“I saw a place where I could help,” she told news station KHON2. “I was rocking and singing to him. I was singing lullabies to him.”
Soothing children is something that comes naturally to Reyes as she has four children of her own and has also been a surrogate mother.
Passenger Rachel Yuen Nih was touched by Reyes’ kindness and opted to film the flight attendant and now-settled baby on her phone.
“It’s just that human kindness, you know?” she said. “Someone going beyond just a job description. It was a privilege for me to witness that and I took out my phone and decided I’m just going to get a snippet of it.”
“She had three little ones with her and the youngest one was just having a hard time,” said Yuen Nih. “Mum was doing everything she could to soothe him.”
“I watched that mum just literally lean back in her chair and breathe.”
That video has now brought a lot of attention to Reyes online and at work.
“A lot of people have been messaging me and reaching out,” said Reyes. “They’re like, ‘I’m not surprised it was you.’”
“I think it’s nothing more than what most of us at Hawaiian Airlines do. That’s our love and we get to love on our passengers,” said Reyes.
Reyes has been a flight attendant for almost three years and tells us she’s always comforting babies on long flights.
Bravo, Gina. There should be more people in the world like you!
