Mum Invents the LapBaby – Designed for Babies to Sit on Our Lap Hands-free

A mum in the UK has developed a new baby product called the LapBaby that allows babies to sit on their parent’s laps, supported by a waist band so the parent can have their hands free. It’s kind of like a baby carrier, but specifically used when sitting down. It’s less restrictive but still safe to keep baby fastened to the parent and allows them to sit upright.

The LapBaby was thought up by mother, Chloe Roberts, while she was on maternity leave with her eldest child who is now three.

“I was at my kitchen table wrapping a gift and needed use of both hands,” she told The Huffington Post UK.

“My baby was grizzling in her bouncer and I wanted to comfort her, I tried slings and carriers but they often became hot, were bulky, restrictive and uncomfortable to wear, particularly when seated.”

The 42-year-old mum used an old hoodie to create the concept of her LapBaby product and started working on a final design that could be sold as product to other parents.

The LapBaby makes multi-tasking easy.

How many of us know what it was like to go to a restaurant and have a baby sit on our lap, while our food goes cold because the baby needs to be held to be comforted.

The LapBaby would have come handy in this situation.

Chloe adopted the LapBaby into everyday life.

“It made daily activities manageable for me and enjoyable for my daughter.” She said.

LapBaby frees both hands so that the parent can easily interact with their child to aid early cognitive, physical and social development.

The product states it “enables parents to carry on with everyday activities, whilst nurturing and comforting their baby”.

The LapBaby will be available to buy from 1 May 2016 and is to be used for babies aged three months and older. Chloe still needs more funds to get her idea off the ground and available to more parents. She has appealed to Virgin Media’s business awards, ‘Voom’ to assist with the project.

What I want to know is why this product wasn’t thought of sooner? I wish I had it with all three of my babies.

How about you? Would you use the LapBaby with your baby? Would it make your life easier?
