The milestone ‘9 months in, 9 months out’ post is a popular one for mums to share online. I know I did when all my babies reached it. It’s incredible to realise your baby has been out of the womb as long as they were in it. I think the posts are lovely and can be a good reminder of how fast that newborn phase can go, even though sometimes it can feel incredibly slow.
One parenting blogger, Mel Watts, shared her 9 month baby milestone post with her readers, but rather than post a highlight reel of how amazing the last 9 months had been, she offered an honest account, which was refreshing for many parents to read.
The blogger behind The Modern Mumma, shared a recap of her life as a mum of a 9-month-old and it was brutally honest about how stressful those 9 months had been.
9 months out of the womb.
“In the last 9 months I have never slept so little in my life. In the last nine months I have suffered my worst anxiety I have ever experienced. Having a new baby is exhausting and life just doesn’t stop. The bills still need to be paid, Groceries still need to be purchased and the pressure you put on yourself is overwhelming.
We expect ourselves to know what we’re doing all the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first or if it’s your third you’re still learning daily. The first 9 months of your babies life is filled with guessing, rocking, smiling and crying. The amount of pressure we put ourselves isn’t fair.
We aren’t invincible.
We’re humans and we’re mothers.
It’s okay to have days that you don’t feel good enough.
It’s okay to feel like you have no idea what day it is. You’ve got this. We’ve got this. Some women seem to have it all. Well so we think. Some women don’t. I don’t. I didn’t have the motivation to even get dressed for the first 9 months let alone get my pre baby body back. And that’s ok. If you do have the motivation good on you! Do everything in your own time, don’t rush because you think that’s what society excepts of you.
Life challenges us daily.
We are given new obstacles every single day. There’s always tomorrow!
So cheers to first 9 months of poop, spew and crappy sleep. We (I) survived and we smashed it.”
The pressure to do it all or ‘have it all’ can be a big stress factor for many mums (myself included!). But being a mum offers daily lessons.
“We aren’t invincible,” she wrote. “We’re humans and we’re mothers.”
Watts wanted to open up about the honest side of motherhood and share her experience with anxiety to help other parents know its “normal to not be on top of it all.”
But despite the challenges, Watts wants to embrace her new role as a mother. It’s something we all must do when we start a family.

It seems mums all around the world agree with the sentiment.
Here’s to motherhood in all its disarray glory.
