NSW Baby Dies After Doctors Disregard Mother’s Pleas for More Tests

When a woman becomes a mum, she is told to trust her intuition if she thinks something is not right with her baby.

Naomi trusted her intuition and believed her baby boy was gravely ill, but her pleas for more tests were ignored by the medical staff.

Naomi and Grant Day wished doctors listened when they knew something was wrong with their six-month old son, Kyran. The parents urged doctors to do further tests on their sick son but he sadly passed away in October 2013 as his obstructed bowel stopped a flow of oxygen to Kyran’s brain.

The six-month-old was diagnosed with gastroenteritis at Shoalhaven Hospital in October 2013, but the parents believed their son was experiencing more than a bout of gastro.

The parents pleaded with doctors to do more tests, but the pleas were rejected and they watched Kyran’s health rapidly decline over the next 30 hours.

When doctors found he had an obstructed bowel, the six-month-old was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital but the diagnosis came too late.

Mr Day told Seven News, “He died from the mismanagement and the mistreatment, the treatment that didn’t happen.”

“The deterioration from the night before was horrific. I told my Mum… he’s severely dehydrated, he’s pale, they’re not doing anything.”

Mr and Mrs Day are now pledging to introduce a law to ensure a parent’s concerns for their children’s health is taken seriously by doctors. In QLD, a similar law is in place called Ryan’s rule.

The grieving parents received an apology from the doctor who worked on Kyran’s case and is now waiting for a coroner’s report.

Same thing happened to me and my daughter when she was 18 months old. It started as a cold non stop coughing then she stopped eating and drinking had Temps of 40 non stop screaming I took her to the drs and peds emergency every day they said nothing was wrong her observations were all normal they didn’t know why she was screaming just said give her panadol and nurafon constantly. In the end her poo was white. On the 5 th day she stopped screaming her stomach bloated. And she laid there looking at me. Frustrated I took her to another dr who did an ex ray and found she had pneumonia. I took her back to the hospital they didn’t believe me said it was scaring g on her lungs from previous lung complications.
I refused to leave she couldn’t hardly breath. They did further blood tests and found her bacteria marker was 265 they rushed her to the brisbane hospital where she needed a lung cleaned out as it was full of puss. Then I was told she had rare complications or pnemicocklye and hus and had no idea if she would survive. Three weeks on hospital she come home thank god no longer being able to walk but she’s perfect now thank god.
