Six Things you Should Consider Before you buy That Baby Onesie

Finding out you’re pregnant can be a wonderful experience for new mums-to-be. It can also be a green light pass to do some guilt-free shopping because it’s for the baby.

The pull to buy clothes, booties and knits can be very strong and you can go in blindly purchasing all the things without really considering if you will need it or if it is practical for your baby to wear.

When your baby does finally arrive you are thrown into the deep end, trying to work out which arm goes where as you dress your baby. Placing little hands into Wondersuits can be stressful, because you don’t want to accidentally miss a finger when pulling the little hand through the arm holes.

Having gone through the experience 3 times now, I thought I’d share some hints about what to look for in baby clothes – specifically newborn clothes to ensure you and your baby are at ease when you dress your little one. Here are six thing you should consider before you buy that baby onesie.

  1. Consider the fastenings. A zipped up suit is much easier to do up than a press stud one. There are also no doubts about putting the wondersuit on incorrectly. The press stud types are still a suit to be considered as there is little room for pinching your baby’s skin with a zip.

2. Consider buying a quality Wondersuit (like Bonds) that have the sewn in hand mitts. A lot of cheaper suits don’t have this feature so mums resort to using baby socks as mitts, but these can come off your baby’s hands easily. Sewn in mitts ensure hands are kept warm at night and sharp finger nails are kept away from their face and eyes. Babies love to put their hands to their face.

3. Footless Wondersuits are great for babies that are long. I found with my girls, if I went up a size in the Wondersuit, the body would be too big, but the length would be just right. Footless Wondersuits meant I could put my daughters in the right size and add socks to keep their feet warm. Place the socks on your baby before you put them in their footless Wondersuit as the leg hem will keep the socks in place.

4. Don’t buy suits our outfits with buttons or fastenings on the back. Remember your baby spends a lot of time on their back asleep, so having a fastener on the back can be uncomfortable for their little backs.

5. If you have a baby that constantly sicks up and wets their Wondersuit, consider putting your baby in a singlet onesie and layer with a tee and tights. This ensures you change the top instead of a complete outfit change. The singlet onesie ensures your baby’s tummy will always be covered if their top rides up as they sleep.

6. Babies aren’t in their Wondersuits for very long. Buying good quality will ensure the suits remain in great condition for future siblings. When you’re completely finished using them, they can be sold second hand or passed on to other family members to use for their babies.
