Toddler Receives Burns to Eyes from Liquid Detergent Pods

A new warning about liquid laundry detergent pods has been raised, after a toddler received burns to his eyes which left him blind for 3 days. The toddler picked up the pod and it burst, which caused the detergent to splash into his eyes.

Mum, Jemima Strain from England explained on Facebook how the simple accident happened while she was doing the laundry with her toddler at her feet.

“My little human picked one up, as he always helps to do the washing, and it popped.”

“On arriving at [the hospital], we spent over an hour and a half with a full team of nurses who had to hold him down and force his eyes open while trying to neutralize the liquid with a liter and a half of saline fluid to wash out his eyes. He was traumatized, as was I.”

The little boy received chemical burns to his eyes and if his quick thinking mum didn’t rush him to hospital so medics could wash out his eyes, he would have suffered further damage to his eyes.

Specialists at the hospital explained to the mum that many children have had their corneas burned off from similar incidents, which left Jemima frustrated that she hadn’t been made aware of the hazard.

She decided to share her experience on a Facebook post to warn other parents to ensure the pods are kept out of reach from children.

Kids are attracted to the packaging design because they are squidgy, but if they burst the pod, they can receive awful injuries from the liquid inside.

“Please don’t let your children help with the washing. These tablets are as bad bleach and can be life threatening if swallowed. We were fortunate . . . we acted fast and he was only blind for three days and with drops started to open his eyes and now has full site back.”

Accidents can seriously happen in the blink of an eye. Keep all detergents – even packaged ones – out of reach from children. We’re so glad Jemima’s little boy has made a full recovery.
