If there was one family who needed a miracle, the Bouchenafa family were determined to receive it.
One-year-old Marwa Bouchenafa was admitted to hospital and place in a medically induced-coma after she contracted a serious virus that attacked her nervous system. Marwa had been in a coma since September and doctors at Marseille’s La Timone hospital told Marwa’s parents she would not wake and if she did, she would be severely disabled.
The doctors planned to pull the life support away from Marwa.
But Marwa’s father, Mohamed Bouchenafa, set up an online petition ‘Never Without Marwa’ to raise money to take his case to court to ensure the one-year-old would be kept alive.
The petition received over 115 thousand signatures. The family were granted a two month extension in court.
Ten days after the court decision, Marwa awoke from her coma, unassisted.
Mr Bouchenafa captured the beautiful moment on video and it has since been shared on news outlets around the world.
Mr Bouchenafa posted the video on Facebook and said, “My little wonder can smile at me, finally continuing to battle.”
He told Inside Edition, “Her face has softer traits than normal … but her condition remains stable, aside from a fever from time to time.”
Marwa will still receive treatment as she fights the virus, but the family are hopeful Marwa will recover and are so ever grateful for the extension of life support.
We wish Marwa all the best as she continues to receive treatment.
