‘Mum’s Milestones’ cards maybe just the best idea EVER for helping mums get through the crazy side of motherhood.
The cards are a hilarious take on the popular baby milestone cards mums usually place next to their baby when they’ve reached a certain age.
‘Mum’s Milestones’ cards understand the struggle mums go through and have created a set of cards to celebrate the parenting moments like sex for the first time since birth “We did it for the first time,” or communication about bodily fluids “I didn’t talk about my baby’s movement’s all day”, and making new friends “I’m now on a first name basis with the pharmacist.”
The cards were created by mothers Esti Zilber and Becky Feiner from Sydney who are mums to two children each. The project was thought up when the mums would get together to talk about the un-glamourous side to parenting including dirty nappies, sleepless nights and everything that helps baby to function.
Zilber told Mashable Australia, “We were spending a lot of time together as new mums, thinking about how stuff we were talking about wasn’t being reflected to us in the products out there, and what was being posted on social media.
“We were having a laugh at how these ‘baby milestones’ were being celebrated with these beautiful photos of babies, but no one was really acknowledging what mums were going through,” she added.
The cards were launched in March this year and were sold out a month later. Most of the cards were designed and developed by Feiner who is an advertising art director. The cards share real-life experiences by both the mothers.
Zilber explained, “I guess at a time when you’re sleep deprived and your hormones are going a bit crazy, that kind of stuff would be either overwhelming or hilarious. It’s a good opportunity for us to let other mums know that they aren’t going through it alone.”
A certain amount of the cards profits are donated to PANDA, an Australian charity that supports perinatal anxiety and depression. The two mums believed donating to PANDA was an important part of the project.
“It’s important to acknowledge that these very much came out of a place that [motherhood] is not all roses, and that it’s not always easy to ask for the help you need,” she explained. “When you’re a new mum, you’re so focused on the baby that sometimes you forget to put yourself first.”
“I think it’s sometimes to OK call bullshit on the baby gift and give something for mum … and a good way to stand out from the crowd at those boring baby showers,” Zilber said.
If you’re looking for a fun gift for a baby shower, these cards may be the perfect gift. The cards are $29.95 and can be purchased here.
