It’s a story we hear all too often now – a parent leaving their baby in the back of their car and not realizing their mistake until it’s too late. Who could forget their baby? We can’t comprehend the pain of the parents and families involved in such a horrific circumstance.
It’s a tragedy that hits the heart of every parent because we ask how could it happen and how could it have been avoided?
In the US, a 4th grade student, Sophie, decided to invent a device to prevent more tragedies like this unfold.
The nine-year-old had to come up with a project to submit to Invention Convention at her school. Her mum groaned at having to think of something to create for the project.
Together, mother and daughter wracked their brains of an invention that would solve a problem or need in the world.
“The only thing I can think of that REALLY needs to be invented, is something to keep parents from forgetting their babies in the car.” said Sophie’s mum.
Sophie’s eyes lit up and she went to work on creating a device that would help parents not forget their children in the back of the car.
Sophie came up with the idea that the device needed to be attached to the parent and the child and it would need to be adjustable for all car sizes.
Sophie sketched her idea and went to work compiling the parts which require only two things: Velcro loops and a stretchy coil chord. The device was called Sophie’s Baby Forget-Me-Not.
The cost of the invention was $12 and Sophie wants all parents to make one to ensure they don’t ever accidentally leave their babies in a car again.
The video explains how the device works.
It’s a very clever idea and is proof that our children are amazing thinkers and problem solvers.
Would this device work for you?
