A little over a year ago Shelly Cawley gave birth to her beautiful daughter Rylan, however what was meant to be one of the happiest days in both her and her families life, took a turn for the worse when she ended up in a coma following Rylan’s birth, after the emergency caesarean which was performed caused a blood clot to travel through Shelly’s blood stream, causing her to fall into a coma.

Of the terrible situation he found himself in on that day Shelly’s husband Jeremy Cawley said: “The idea of going from the highest of emotions of having a child born… to the next moments where you think you’re going to be saying goodbye to your wife within four or five hours. I was numb.” Shelly’s Doctors were not certain if she would survive to the next day, prompting one of her nurses, Ashley Manus to arrange for skin to skin contact between Rylan and Shelly, of the situation she said “We knew skin to skin contact was very beneficial to an infant, so we thought, why not try it for a mum because the baby [was] already thriving, she was doing great.” Jeremy explains they lay Rylan sleeping in Shelly’s arms and when she let out a cry, Shelly’s vital signs immediately spiked and a few days later she woke up.
Shelly says “They think that me hearing her subconsciously gave my body and my subconscious a reason to fight, that all I still needed to be there for my baby.”
Shelly took to her Facebook page on Rylan’s birthday to reflect on how far her precious family has come over the past year, writing:
“As the night comes to a close, I reflect on my day and how different it was than at the same time a year ago. What a difference a year makes! Last year I was fighting for my life, and this year I have a 1 year old who is thriving, and I am back in nursing school doing what I love. Satan tried to take me down, but thanks to our mighty God and all of you amazing prayer warriors, what could have been an end to my life has just been a bump in the road on my journey! Can’t wait to discover what God has planned for my life, and to just enjoy the ride on the way there!”
