Mothers of newborn babies are struggling more than ever with the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation, with some barely sleeping at all according to a new study.

The national survey, conducted by Galaxy Research for sleep behaviour program Dream Start Baby, found 84 per cent of Aussie mums with babies and toddlers aged up to three years have suffered sleep deprivation. The vast majority say they’ve experienced negative feelings (95 per cent) and exhaustion (80 per cent) when their baby was unsettled and not sleeping well.

The poll also discovered the average mum gets less than four and a half hours of sleep a night in the first few months with their new baby with one in four mums (24 per cent) usually getting just three hours or less of sleep each night.

Specifically, around half of all mums surveyed say reduced sleep caused particularly stressful feelings including anxiety (50 per cent), feelings of failure (47 per cent) and guilt (40 per cent). A further 22 per cent admit to battling severe depression or post-natal depression as a result.

Dream Start Baby co-founders Maryanne Sayers and Steph Gouin say lack of sleep is most commonly cited as the number one issue challenging new parents these days and say that not enough has been done to seriously address it.

Maryanne and Steph, who have five children between them, say their own battles with chronic sleep deprivation and work as sleep consultants, led them to develop Dream Start Baby.
