Little Jessica Survives the Odds After her Mum’s Lifesaving Surgery

When Vicky was 20 weeks pregnant, she was told to say goodbye to her unborn baby with doctors telling her it was a one-in-a-million chance for the baby to survive the lifesaving surgery Vicky needed.

Just three days earlier, doctors had found a tumour the size of a rugby ball in her stomach and to save her life, they needed to remove 30% of her stomach and 70% of her bowel.

Without the surgery, both Vicky and her unborn child would die thanks to the agressive nature of the cancer.

However, when Vicky woke from the surgery, she was elated to be told that the baby had survived – even thought doctors still warned of a miscarriage thanks to the months of chemotherapy she would have to face.

Baby Jessica Joy was born at 36 weeks, weighing 4lb 14.

Two weeks after her birth, Vicky resumed chemotherapy to ‘mop up’ any stray cancer cells. The treatment was a success and in June this year, she was declared cancer free.

To avoid the cancer returning, she will have full hysterectomy as a preventative measure.

She says: “It sounds drastic but I will do anything to be around for my girls. I won’t stop fighting for them. And Jessica has showed me that you should never give up on a fight.”
