A Melbourne woman was on her way to hospital when she gave birth in the back seat of an Uber in New York last week. Marina Arthur and were husband Andrew found themselves stuck in the gridlock that is NY traffic when they realised their baby could not wait a minute longer.
Uber driver, Rafael Abreu knew that it would have taken him at least another 30 minutes to get to the hospital so he left the couple in the car and ran to get help.
New York City Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Rivera arrived on the scene to find Ms Arthur squatting in the back seat giving birth to her baby, a girl named Hazel. The sheriff also reported that her husband was the whitest shade of white he’d ever seen.
After instructing the Uber driver to turn the heat up in the car to keep the baby warm Sheriff Rivera then said he would take the family himself to the hospital.
‘I said, “We’re gonna fly down there. I’ll have you there in seven or eight minutes. No problem”,’ Deputy Rivera said before activating his siren.
All ended well with the mother and baby in the care of specialist doctors at the hospital. This is the second girl for the couple who also have a 2 year old Willow.
