10 Ideas for Decorating a Nursery on a Budget

The nursery can be one of the most expensive purchases for your baby. It’s the room that will keep your precious bundle safe while they sleep, and a place you will spend a fair amount of time in for changes and breastfeeding. Before you spend thousands on creating a sanctuary for your newborn, why not check out our 10 ideas for decorating a nursery on a budget?

1. Buy the essentials first. Essentials will be different for each parent, but for the sake of the budget, your baby really needs a cot, a wardrobe/chest of drawers for clothing storage and a change table. To save money on furniture costs, why not convert the top of chest of drawers into change table by adding a change mat. Fill the top drawer with nappies and lotions for easy access while changing.

2. Buy a cot that can be converted to a toddler bed so you can get longevity out of your purchase. Don’t be conned into buying a designer cot. Your baby won’t notice they’re sleeping in the Rolls Royce of cots and at 9 months, the railing will be damaged by chew marks when your baby learns how to stand – and chew when teething.

3. Rather than buy a bassinette, why not use a port-a-cot instead? It can be wheeled in and out of your bedroom when needed.

4. Minimise the bedding. You baby won’t require a quilt or cushions in their cot. In fact, it can be a SIDS risk to include those items in the cot. Keep the bedding limited to a fitted sheet only. Your baby will be swaddled for the first 6 months and then will most likely sleep in a sleeping bag. Choose fun prints for the fitted sheet to add interest to the room.

5. Choose fun art work by purchasing prints online and using cheap frames from department stores.

6. Decorate with cheap décor accents from department stores like Kmart and Big W. Baskets for storage and fun bedside tables can add a fun touch to the nursery.

7. Add a feature wall. Painting the nursery is one of the easiest ways to add colour and interest to the room. You can paint over the feature wall when your child gets older. Alternatively, you could wall paper one wall of the room.

8. Use vintage family heirlooms if possible to add an eclectic feel to your nursery. An old rocking chair or toy chest can bring family history into a room which adds a special touch.

9. Hang outfits on the wall and behind the door for wall art.

10. Rather than install a pendant light, purchase a night lamp instead. They are cheaper to purchase and run.
