Heartstopping Video Shows Why It’s Important to Harness Dressers to The Wall

A heartstopping video shared on YouTube has reminded parents around the world how important it is to secure dressers and bookshelves to the wall when young children are around.

The YouTube video that was uploaded by Ricky Shoff, a father from Utah in the US, shows how his two-year-old twin sons climbed a dresser.

What happens next is painstaking to watch.

One twin, Brock gets stuck underneath the fallen dresser, visibly distressed that he can’t get free, while his brother Bowdy is distracted by what looks to be a baby monitor.

After a minute Bowdy helps his brother by moving the dresser so his trapped twin can wriggle free.

The video is shocking and heartstopping to watch, but it offers a timely reminder to all parents to harness heavy furniture to the wall. The dresser fell over in a matter of seconds.

Ricky shared his video on Facebook with the following warning:

“I’ve been a little hesitant to post this. But I feel it’s not only to bring awareness, but it is also incredible. We are so grateful for the bond that these twin brothers share. We know Bowdy was not alone in moving the dresser off of Brock. And feel blessed that he is ok. Please make sure all your dressers are bolted and secured to the wall. Please share.”

The video was captured on the family’s nursery surveillance camera. Both Ricky and his wife Kayli didn’t hear the dresser fall. When Kayli checked on the boys, she saw the dresser had fallen over and the boys were undeterred by its displacement.

When the parents viewed the footage from the camera, they were shocked to see what had happened. It’s a miracle Brock didn’t get hurt or suffer fatal consequences from the accident.

Not all children have been lucky to survive similar incidents.

Drawers from Ikea, that weren’t secured to the wall, were in the spotlight two years ago after three young boys died when being trapped underneath them. All incidents happened in the US, but the warnings have travelled worldwide. As a result of the deaths the Ikea Malm dressers were recalled in 2015.

Dressers aren’t the only furniture parents need to be aware of that require being harnessed to the wall. Bookshelves and flat screen TV’s also need to be secured to prevent them toppling onto children if climbed on.

The warnings to parents about the need for bolting furniture to the walls is often neglected information, but this video shows how important it is, for the safety of the children.
